The airport’s 3.6-kilometre runway is the longest in Vietnam and can accommodate Boeing 777, Boeing 787, Boeing 747-400, Airbus A350 aircrafts and similar planes.
Van Don Airport will have at least six parking lots for aircraft. Goods through the airport will be handled at the passenger terminal until 2020 before a dedicated cargo terminal is finished in 2030, with an annual capacity of at least 51,000 tons.
The airport is being built on an area of 320 hectares in Doan Ket commune of Van Don district, approximately 50 kilometers from Ha Long and 20 kilometers from Cam Pha, at a total cost of VND7.5 trillion (US$330 million) over three phases.
The first phase will cost an estimated VND3.9 trillion (US$171.6 million).
Van Don Airport, which commenced construction in 2015 and is scheduled for completion this year, is a major infrastructure project aimed at boosting Quang Ninh province’s socio-economic development.
