UN member countries are discussing solution to the global drug problem. The Vietnamese delegation led by Deputy Minister of Public Security Le Quy Vuong attended the event.
At the Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly on the World Drug Problem, United Nations members adopted a joint statement prioritising a reduction in drug supply and demand. Member countries, particularly ASEAN countries, also had separate meetings to discuss co-operation mechanisms in the prevention of drug trafficking, production and drug use in the Lower Mekong sub-region.
"The proposals made by Vietnam in plenary session and in the meeting with Lower Mekong Sub-region countries were welcomed by all member countries. These proposals are in line with the UN conventions, particularly the protection of human rights. In regards to drug addicts, we’re try to help them overcome their addiction and help them return home to actively contribute to society." - Senior Lieutenant General Le Quy Vuong, Deputy Minister of Public Security.
Speaking at the plenary session, Senior Lieutenant General Le Quy Vuong also noted that the global drug control defined in the UN Conventions should serve as the foundation for controlling global drug crimes. Vietnam shares ASEAN's view of zero tolerance of drugs and continues to pursue the long-term objectives of a drug-free world.
