According to researchers, plastic waste in the UK especially microplastics has been out of control. The pollution has mainly been from single-use plastic such as food packaging, milk, and water bottles and plastic bags. Greenpeace is calling for the government to introduce "bold" new plastic reduction targets and create an independent watchdog with powers to enforce them. According to the Wildlife Conservation Society, there is 150 thousand to 500 thousand tons of plastic waste in European waters every year including 70 thousand to 130 thousand tons of microplastics.
