On this occasion, people clean and tidy their houses, splashing water to take away dusts and dirt, welcoming a new year with luck and prosperity. In Bangkok, Thailand, thousands of locals and tourists have gathered in Silom to participate in the water fights, using giant water guns. The event, known as Songkran, is viewed as the biggest water splashing festival in the world. This is also an opportunity for the locals the pay their respect and homage to their predecessors by pouring water in the hands – a symbolic action for purity of the new year.
Meanwhile in Yangon, the capital of Myanmar, local people have come together at the City Hall to enjoy traditional dance moves and walk through a water tunnel. This is believed that this action can eradicate bad lucks from the past year and head to a new fresh year.
The water splashing festival takes place in other South East Asian countries, such as Laos and Cambodia.
