Thai parliament votes for new Prime Minister

Thailand's new Prime Minister will need at least 376 votes, including 500 members in the lower House of Representatives elected in the March election and 250 senators, who were all appointed by the junta. The candidates for the Prime Minister office are pro-junta incumbent Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, a young politician leading the Future Forward Party.

The Democrat party on Tuesday declared the alliance with Thailand's People's State Power Party - Palang Pracharat-led coalition government. Meanwhile, together with the 250 senators' votes for Prayuth, his victory appears certain. The junta will remain in power until the new Cabinet is sworn in.
