Vu Phong Ky appeared on the stage of Station of Love with a computer and confidently introduced his teaching work. He demonstrated the steps of photo editing to help the audience get an idea of the knowledge he imparts to his students. Typically, a course takes six months, but Ky revealed that in his class, with some graduating in just 3-4 months due to their diligence and quick learning abilities.
Phong Ky was not born with a disability, but his life changed drastically when he was six years old. At that time, Phong Ky suffered from persistent bone and joint pain. Although his parents took him to several hospitals, his condition did not improve. Osteoporosis weakened his limbs, leading to frequent fractures and stunted physical growth. By the age of 12, Phong Ky was confined to a wheelchair. Dependent on his family for daily activities, he was forced to abandon his education and his dream of pursuing a career in information technology, despite being a good student.
Unable to move independently or do what he desired, Phong Ky's ambitions seemed stifled, making him increasingly insecure and directionless. The scrutinizing stares and gossip made him retreat further into his shell. There were many times when he felt helpless in the face of his situation, but his parents' care and support motivated him to keep trying.
In 2009, when Phong Ky learned about the Center for Living Power, he longed to attend but was discouraged when he read that applicants needed to be able to support themselves. In 2014, however, opportunity smiled upon him when a family with disabilities from his hometown encouraged and supported him to go to Hanoi to study. During his time at the Center for Living Power, Phong Ky not only learned a trade and gained knowledge but also received a great deal of love from those in similar situations.
Due to his hard work, continuous effort, and family encouragement, Ky excelled in an IT course after just two months and passed the entrance exam for Esoftflow Ltd. (part of Esoft Systems, one of Denmark's leading companies specializing in developing and providing graphic solutions and products). He then became a graphic designer and photo editor. Aside from having a job and a steady income, what made Phong Ky happiest was being able to compete based on his abilities like anyone else
From being a person with a disability, Ky rose to become a senior graphic technician. After four years of work and gaining extensive experience, he never forgot the place that helped him find meaning in life. Vu Phong Ky returned to the Center for Living Power to become a teacher and train others in similar circumstances. "I feel meaningful when I can share the knowledge I have gained with friends in the same situation. Seeing them reminds me of my past, and I want to help them find employment and prove that they can contribute to life".
The unexpected appearance of Ms. Ngo Thi Huyen Minh, a representative of the Living Power Joint Stock Company, a social enterprise, helped the audience better understand the work and dedication of Vu Phong Ky in teaching skills to disabled students. Sharing his dreams for the future, he expressed his desire to continue teaching, build a communication channel to share the stories and photos he has edited and inspire people with disabilities to rise above their challenges. The gift from "The Love Station" will further strengthen his faith and strength on this humanitarian journey.
In addition to showcasing his impressive photo editing skills, Vu Phong Ky also demonstrated his captivating singing voice in the Station of Love episode themed "Living for Those in Similar Circumstances", aired at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 18, 2024, on VTV1.
