VTV.vn - Snail storks are considered to be a distinct feature of the Mekong Delta Region. However, illegal hunting has posed a great threat to the survival of these animals.

The snail stork is now listed as one of the most endangered species in Vietnam. Yellow snails are considered to be highly damaging pests for agricultural production in the Mekong Delta Region. However, snail storks, whose favourite food is yellow snails, have come to the rescue. The birds can be commonly found in mangrove forests.

"Snail storks play a very important role in balancing the local region's ecosystem. They help us counter the spread of yellow snails", said Nguyen Thi Nga - Tram Chim National Park, Dong Thap Province.

In the 1980s, 1000 stork nests were discovered in Dam Doi Bird Park, Ca Mau Province. However, their population has greatly depleted due to excessive hunting. Thạnh Hoa's markets in the South Central Province of Long An sell a great number of snail storks every day. Dealers have revealed that they can meet any level of demand for these birds.

The last 3 years saw the mass migration of about 15,000 snail storks to Dong Thap Muoi in Dong Thap Province. Previously, these animals only migrated to Dong Thap Muoi seasonally. Now, they have chosen this place to stay permanently due to the favourable natural habitat of the locality.

Having recognised the significance of snail storks, the authorities are implementing measures to protect the species. Several projects have already been established to create favourable conditions for snail storks' survival.
