VTV.vn - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a session on November 23 to discuss multilateral diplomacy and the enhancement of Vietnam’s participation and contributions at multilateral forums in dealing with non-traditional security challenges.

The event was held within the framework of activities leading to the 31st Diplomatic Conference.

The session focused on identifying the current status and impacts of current non-traditional security challenges on the international, regional and national levels, and at the same time discussed political policies and measures to enhance Vietnam's role and contributions at multilateral forums in responding to non-traditional security challenges.

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dang Hoang Giang assessed that multilateral foreign affairs work has achieved many positive results in recent time. Notably, Vietnam successfully assumed the roles of ASEAN Chair in 2020 and non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2020-2021 term, chaired the 41st General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, as well as made many active and proactive contributions at major international and regional forums such as the Non-Aligned Movement, the International Organisation of La Francophonie, APEC, ASEM, the Mekong River Commission, etc. Vietnam also successfully stood for election to many important UN agencies.

Deputy Minister Giang affirmed that these achievements were the result of the correct guidelines and policies of the Party and State, the participation of the whole political system, the close attention and direct participation of senior leaders, as well as the effective and active implementation and contribution efforts of relevant ministries, branches and localities.

Delegates at the session also agreed on a number of major measures to promote multilateral foreign affairs in general and respond to non-traditional security issues in particular, including the promotion of public relations and cooperation; researching, strategically forecasting, and actively proposing initiatives and ideas at multilateral forums; and strengthening the smooth coordination among ministries, departments, branches and representative agencies of Vietnam abroad in order to take advantage of the synergy of the whole political system in enhancing Vietnam's participation in multilateral mechanism in the near future.
