The laurel wreath for the Road to Olympia Mount 2024 winner has been completed. Once again, this year’s wreath is the work of designer Do Van Tri (also known by his artistic name, To-Ri). Having been involved with the program for nearly 10 years, he he said: "This year, I wanted to return to the original concept of the laurel wreath with olive branches but make it more magnificent and grandiose, symbolizing glory and victory. The wreath is circular, with no beginning and no end, representing infinite knowledge. The laurel leaves were chosen as a symbol because, in Greek mythology, they are associated with the god Apollo, who represents light, truth, and art. This wreath embodies my passion and dedication, encouraging the contestants in the final."
Meticulously designed laurel leaves
The materials for the wreath are always carefully chosen by the designer and are often made from brass – a lightweight, soft, and shiny metal resembling real gold. Designer Tri Van explained that once the crafting stages are complete, the wreath undergoes a thorough inspection to ensure there are no flaws and that it meets the highest standards. The final steps involve polishing, smoothing, and careful sanding to removesharp edges and imperfections to achieve a flawless finish.
Finally, the wreath is plated with 18K gold for added luxury and value, with a nano-coating applied to prevent oxidation and ensure durability over time.
Each laurel leaf is handcrafted.
Designer Do Van Tri revealed that each laurel leaf is handcrafted, cut, and engraved with meticulous detail before being plated in 18-karat gold. The wreath is not just a prestigious award but a piece of art that he passionately presents to the champion. The 18-karat gold plating not only enhances its material value but also adds a sense of elegance. Every small detail showcases the refinement and craftsmanship, symbolizing the champion's hard work and perseverance. Designer Van Tri said “Every time I make a laurel wreath, it’s like sending a message to help fulfill dreams and celebrate the challenging but rewarding learning journey of the students. The wreath is not just a gift; it’s a congratulatory gesture and a tribute to the deserving victors.”
The process of handcrafting a laurel wreath usually takes about a month, but the conceptualization can take an entire year, requiring patience and a high level of skill from the artisan. Designer Van Tri's philosophy in designing each laurel wreath is: "It doesn't have to be the most beautiful—but it must always be unique." Every creation by this young designer must have its own vitality and be a special, one-of-a-kind version, which demands continuous and relentless creativity.
Designer Van Tri explained how his connection with the Road to Olympia Mount came about unexpectedly. While watching the live broadcast of the final year, he noticed the simple laurel wreath given to the winner and thought, "Why does such a prestigious competition awardi such a simple laurel wreath?" He then posted a random status on his page: "Let me design the laurel wreath for Road to Olympia Mount, and I’ll make it more beautiful!" Unexpectedly, the show reached out to him with a proposal.
Since 2014 (with a few years off), he has been invited to design the laurel wreath for the Road to Olympia Mount Grand Final. Designer Van Tri believes that education is the most beautiful and righteous path, so he is always proud and happy to contribute to such a prestigious program.
