VTV.vn - A forum entitled “Realising Viet Nam’s hydrogen economy – From vision to action” was held in Ha Noi, on June 24, drawing the participation of numerous domestic and international experts, policymakers, investors and business representatives.

The event, organised by the Viet Nam Clean Energy Magazine, aimed to foster the development of a sustainable green hydrogen ecosystem in Viet Nam.

Delivering the opening remarks, Mai Duy Thien, Chairman of the Viet Nam Clean Energy Association, emphasised that hydrogen, particularly green hydrogen, is emerging as a globally strategic energy solution. It can be widely applied in electricity generation, transportation, and heavy industries without emitting carbon throughout its lifecycle.

"Viet Nam has issued its Hydrogen Energy Development Strategy for 2030 with a vision to 2050. However, turning this vision into reality requires the joint effort of the entire ecosystem: from the government to businesses, research institutes, universities, and the public," Thien stressed.

At the forum, Dang Hai Anh, Deputy Director of the Petroleum and Coal Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, stated that over a year since the launch of the hydrogen energy strategy, Viet Nam has attracted strong interest from both domestic and international investors. While most projects are still in the investment preparation phase, early developments already indicate significant potential in producing hydrogen from renewable energy sources and carbon capture processes.

The target by 2030 is to reach an annual hydrogen output of approximately 100,000 to 500,000 tonnes, meeting both domestic demand and export needs, while contributing to energy security and the goal of net-zero emissions.

Speaking on the cost of green hydrogen production, Associate Professor Pham Hoang Luong, senior lecturer at Ha Noi University of Science and Technology and Vice Chairman of the Viet Nam Clean Energy Association, noted that thanks to advances in technology and the declining cost of renewable electricity, hydrogen production costs are trending downwards. This opens up competitive opportunities for hydrogen in the near future. He added that current energy transition demands a high degree of stability and diversity in energy supply and demand systems, with hydrogen playing a pivotal role.

The forum serves as an important platform for stakeholders to share policy perspectives, update on international trends from countries such as the Republic of Korea, Germany, and Japan, and exchange experiences in promoting public-private partnership (PPP) models as well as in relation to developing a domestic hydrogen market.
