Engineering Brigade 249 under the Engineering Corps on September 30 morning officially opened the Phong Chau pontoon bridge, spanning the Hong (Red) river and connecting Lam Thao district with Tam Nong district in the northern province of Phu Tho.

This is to replace the Phong Chau bridge which collapsed in the wake of Typhoon Yagi that hit the northern region earlier this month.

Phong Chau bridge was partially swept away by floodwaters on September 9. The same day, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh ordered urgent measures to settle the incident.

The pontoon bridge basically resolves the travel difficulties faced by local residents, and is passible to automobiles weighing 10 tonnes at most.

At an online meeting on Typhoon Yagi on September 28, PM Chinh requested the Ministries of Transport, Construction, Finance, and Planning and Investment, and Phu Tho province to complete the construction of a new Phong Chau bridge no later than 2025. It will be built at the old location at a cost of 875 billion USD (35.6 million USD), sourced from the state budget.
