VTV.vn - Cyrano de Bergerac’, one of the most renowned theatrical works of France, will be introduced at L'Espace French Cultural Centre in Hanoi, on October 7, following the previous successful screening of “Roméo and Juliette”.

The play was created by playwright Edmond Rostand, with stage production by Denis Podalydès, scenography by Éric Ruf and costumes by Christian Lacroix. The play, performed by artists of the theatre Comédie-Française, was filmed live on stage by Dominique Thiel.

Rostand, Edmond (1868-1918) – A French poet and playwright who first published a volume of poetry but later gained fame as a writer of entertaining poetic plays.

Cyrano de Bergerac is a play written in 1897 by Edmond Rostand and is one of the most popular plays in modern French theater. This tragicomedy is based upon the life of the free-thinking seventeenth century author Cyrano de Bergerac who was equally well-known for his great skill in duels and for his exceedingly long nose. Rostand gained immediate fame for his compassionate portrayal of this poet-lover.

The play tells the story of Hercule Savinien Cyrano de Bergerac, a cadet (nobleman serving as a soldier) in the French Army, who is a brash, strong-willed man of many talents. In addition to being a remarkable duelist, he is a gifted, joyful poet and also a musician. However, he has an extremely large nose, which causes him to doubt himself. This doubt prevents him from expressing his love for his distant cousin, the beautiful and intellectual Roxane, as he believes that his ugliness would prevent him from the "dream of being loved by even an ugly woman."

In 2007, a year after the first performance, ‘Cyrano de Bergerac’ won six Molières Award, which is the French equivalent of the Oscars for the theater.

The work will be screened in its original language with Vietnamese subtitles.
