At the event, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment released statistics that state, in 2014, the world produced 314 million tonnes of plastic. This number is expected to reach 1,124 million tonnes in 2050. However, only 14% of plastic waste from production is recycled or reused, while the rest leads to environmental pollution. Vietnam now ranks 4th in Asia in terms of plastic waste. Each day, 80 to 100 tonnes of plastic waste are produced in Hanoi and Hồ Chí Minh City. Vietnam aims to collect and reuse up to 50% of plastic waste by 2020.
