The city has been established on the basis of the entire natural area and population of Phu Quoc island district, becoming the first island city in Vietnam.
Addressing the ceremony, Deputy PM Truong Hoa Binh said that Phu Quoc has made great strides over recent years, from a remote island district separated from major cities of the country to a city with its own international airport, seaport, and national power grid. Many large corporations are present in Phu Quoc, investing in modern and large-scale projects at international standards.
“The establishment of Phu Quoc city under Kien Giang province is of great significance and is not only an inevitable trend but also contributes to stabilising socio-economic development and ensuring defence and security in the southern area,” the Deputy PM noted.
He said that the Government has identified Phu Quoc as one of the destinations in Vietnam that will help restore international tourism after the COVID-19 pandemic is controlled.
The government official also emphasised the necessity of building a special policy and mechanism for Phu Quoc city to develop its island urban government and attract large investors in order to become a major tourism and trade hub of the country and the region with fits our main pillars of entertainment industry, tourism and resorts, banking and financial services and the marine economy.
Phu Quoc is the largest island in the country with an area of 590,000km2 and a population of 179,480.
The city will include two wards, namely Duong Dong and An Thoi, and the seven communes of Ham Ninh, Duong To, Ganh Dau, Bai Thom, Cua Duong, Can Can, and Tho Chau.
