VTV.vn - A new report published on Monday by the Institute for Social Development has raised the problem of leaving family responsibilities to woman alone as one of the major factors causing gender inequality in Vietnam.

The report blamed traditional notions of women’s roles and values as being key factors leading to gender inequality in Vietnam. According to the report, Vietnamese women are currently responsible for 12 out of 14 house tasks from cooking to caring for the sick. Over one fifth of women in the survey are consigned to being housewives.

The findings of the report partly explain why progress in gender equality hasn’t proved commensurate with the country's otherwise impressive achievements in social and economic development. According to the institute, to deal with gender inequality in Vietnam, rigid notions of women’s roles and values need to be changed, men should share house works while the independence of women should be promoted.
