Experts concluded that a lack of sand and sediment in the upstream section of the Vu Gia-Thu Bon river basin was the direct cause for erosion on the Cua Dai coastline of Hoi An.
Despite this, the diversion of flow, infringement onto the river and over-exploitation of sand and sediment continue to take place in these two rivers.
The presenting research team called for the implementation of a project to prevent erosion in the coastline through supplementing sand or creating a system of revetments.
The experience from carrying out such a project, experts say, can be valuable in finding suitable solutions for the Mekong Delta coastline, which has also been severely threatened by erosion.
