VTV.vn - Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam has asked the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) to urgently finalise and promptly issue regulations for the 2020 university admission process early next month.

The deputy PM made the request at a meeting with the MOET and relevant agencies on April 27 to discuss the organisation plans of the national high school graduation exam and the university admission procedure amid the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The MOET needs to promptly announce sample tests of the graduation exam to reassure students, parents and teachers and to serve students’ exam review, while working to ensure an honest, safe and quality exam and creating favourable conditions for the admission work of universities and colleges, he said.

At the meeting, the MOET affirmed that despite the impact of the pandemic, this year’s national high school graduation exam will still be organised in a serious and honest manner, ensuring accurate, objective and reliable exam results. The ministry will design appropriate exam questions and organise the close supervision of the entire exam process. Universities may use the exam results as a basis for admission.

The MOET leader said that in the long term, the announcement of a single score for a combined test (either natural sciences or social sciences) will help to avoid “narrowed learning” (focusing on studying well in just a single subject instead of several). However, after hearing opinions from representatives of the Association of Vietnam Universities and Colleges and the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Communications and Education, the ministry will absorb and adjust the combined test, as well as increase the timeline for exams as in previous years, and will still publish the score for each component test.

* Speaking at a meeting of the Hanoi steering committee for COVID-19 response on April 27, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung asked the municipal Department of Education and Training to prepare every condition for students’ return to school, ensuring safety and requirements for pandemic prevention and control.

Accordingly, students at secondary schools, high schools, colleges, universities and vocational schools will resume their classes from May 4. The city will decide on the date for primary schools and kindergartens to reopen next Wednesday.

Earlier, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training designed a four-phase scenario for welcoming students back to school and submitted it to the municipal People’s Committee for consideration and approval.
