These days, 22 Hang Buom Arts Center is filled with the colours of traditional Mid-Autumn toys featured in the Lưu Trăng (Preserving the Moon) art exhibition. Here, memories of festivals past are being brought back to life in ways that connect with today.
Crab-shaped lanterns, lion heads and paper scholars. More than 50 works on display recreate the Mid-Autumn toys of the past. Made from bamboo, paper and decorated in bright colours, they bring back memories of traditional Mid-Autumn celebrations in Hanoi.
Ngo Quang Khoi, a student of Tran Nhat Duat Primary School, Hanoi, said: "I saw lanterns, puppets and a very big moon over there. I really like the Mid-Autumn Festival because I can wear beautiful masks and eat delicious mooncakes.
Thuy Duong, a Hanoi resident, said: "I was excited to enter this nostalgic space filled with Vietnamese folk culture. Both children and adults can take part and help preserve these traditions."
To bring traditional toys closer to younger generations, young creators have studied old designs and crafting techniques. They are giving these toys new forms while preserving the materials, aesthetics and spirit of Vietnamese folk culture.
Nguyen Duc Anh, a student of National Economics University in Hanoi, said: "I want to bring paper scholars back to life in a new form that connects with young people, while preserving their meaning as symbols of good wishes for children".
The Lưu Trăng exhibition also connects visitors with artisans and heritage practitioners. They can make Mid-Autumn lanterns, paint paper masks, and try traditional crafts.
Nguyen Duc Binh, an artist and Head of Dinh Lang Viet Club, said: We began preparations late last year, from developing the concept to dividing the work. We aimed to stay as close as possible to traditional culture while still bringing in a contemporary spirit.
The exhibition is open free of charge until 27 September, bringing traditional Mid-Autumn memories back to Ha Noi's Old Quarter.
