Mekong Delta to develop 500,000 hectares of high quality rice

VTV.vn - The Mekong Delta is Vietnam's main rice production region, with rice output remaining stable at 24-25 million tonnes/year, accounting for 90% of the country's rice exports. However, the value of rice is still not as high as it could be due to traditional cultivation methods.

Therefore, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has proposed a project to develop a million hectares of high-quality rice in the Mekong Delta with the achievable goal of 500,000 hectares of high-quality rice in 2025. To achieve this, many support plans have been proposed.

Specifically, farmers will receive 30% of the cost of purchasing rice seeds for the first four consecutive crops and be eligible for unsecured bank loans of up to 824 USD /production crop, with a loan term of six months.

Farmers can earn, on average, 35% more when cultivating high-quality rice, thanks to the reduced volumes of seed, fertiliser and water required.
