VTV.vn - A meeting was held in Hanoi on May 28 to observe the World No Tobacco Day (May 31) and the National No Tobacco Week (May 25-31).

The Director of Hanoi city Department of Health, Nguyen Khac Hien, cited that tobacco-related diseases are currently responsible for the death of approximately six million people from across the world each year; five million of those deaths are in low-income and middle-income countries

The World Health Organization (WHO) warned that 1 billion people worldwide could die from tobacco-related causes this century unless "urgent action" is taken, he stressed.

The delegates were informed that Hanoi municipal People’s Committee have put forward an action plan on control and prevention of tobacco related illnesses for the 2019-2020 period and have started campaigns on risk reduction and public awareness about the dangers, particularly among youth and adolescents.

Assc. Prof. Dr. Luong Ngoc Khue, Director of the Hanoi city’s Fund for the Prevention of Tobacco Harms, called for more practical solutions to build up smoke-free environments in public spaces and tourism sites in Hanoi in order to attract more visitors to the capital city.

Following the meeting, delegates and students took part in the bicycle parade during which they waved banners informing the public of the health impact of smoking.
