VTV.vn - The European Commission's inspection team is set to return to Vietnam in two months to review the country's efforts in handling illegal fishing.

The National Steering Committee for the prevention and control of IUU fishing had a meeting with the Ministry of Defense and representatives of several localities to discuss measures to prevent violations.

Participants proposed a criminal penalty if a ship's owner and captain conduct illegal activities several times. Fishing vessels that donot install GPS devices will not be allowed to set sail. It's necessary to strengthen communication and supervision on the shore and tighten the traceability of seafood. This will help solve the root cause because when illegal seafood can't be sold, fishermen won't fish illegally. Delegates believe that the next inspection may be the last opportunity of Vietnam's seafood industry to move toward a sustainable and responsible fishery sector.
