VTV.vn - Mekong Delta provinces are taking various preventive solutions to cope with a high rate of saltwater intrusion recorded since early February.

In Tien Giang, steel dykes have been built to store fresh water for agricultural production land in the province and neighbouring Long An. Meanwhile, in Kien Giang, the coastal sluice system has been reinforced and is ready to operate when saline intrusion occurs.

The Ministry of Agriculture has also directed the operation of the Cái Lớn sluice of the Cái Lớn - Cái Bè irrigation system. The largest irrigation project in the region, it helps regulate water for more than 384,000 hectares of productive land in the five provinces of the Ca Mau peninsula.

Specialized agencies have forecast that saltwater could penetrate the coastal provinces of the Mekong Delta by 50 to 65 km in February and March.
