Dr. Nguyen Ly Thinh Truong, Director of the Children's Cardiology Centre at the Vietnam National Hospital of Pediatrics, said that the eight-day-old child was brought to Noi Bai International Airport from Vientiane on November 1.
The 3.1 kilo baby was diagnosed with a congenital heart problem related to arteries. Lao doctors asked Vietnam National Hospital of Pediatrics for the support. The baby’s condition worsened on arrival at Noi Bai International Airport. Luckily, the Vietnamese doctors were available to provide first aid. After that, the child underwent a three-hour operation at the hospital. The ultrasonic result on Thursday showed that the child’s heart was in good condition and it was discharged from hospital on Friday. The baby can now sleep and eat well. Truong noted that this was a difficult heart operation as the child was so small. This was the 500th successful arterial switch operation conducted by Vietnam National Hospital of Paediatrics. The smallest patient was a one-day new-born baby.
