Khmer people's full moon speciality

The festival starts from today until the end of this year's harvest season to show appreciation to the Moon deity for blessing them with good weather and a bumper harvest.

At the ceremony, the Khmer people offer flattened Cốm or young rice flakes made from the most glutinous rice grains as the centrepiece of their offerings.

The oldest person in the family feeds pieces of Com to the children and asks them about their wishes. If the ceremony is held in a pagoda, a monk or another prestigious member of the community feeds the children.

The rich speciality of flattened rice flakes adds a sweet sentiment to the Full-moon Festival in the Mekong Delta.

The distinct flavour of this type of Cốm is becoming more well-known, thereby helping locals preserve this regional speciality.

Besides the ritual, the Ok Om Bok festival includes entertainments such as art performances and Ghe Ngo races.
