The meeting was held only a few days after the attack on a mosque that killed 305 people in Egypt's North Sinai province. The Crown Prince and Defense Minister of Saudi Arabia, Mohammad bin Salman said that over the years, the participating countries have suffered the threats of terrorism to varying degrees, but failed to carry out strong coordination and communication in the coalition.
He hopes that each member can strengthen cooperation in the areas of military, culture and media, economic investment, and religion and ideology to realize the common goal of combating terrorism. The Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition was announced in December 2015 by the Saudi Crown Prince to form a unified Pan-Islamic front against terrorism. As of December 2016, 41 Muslim countries have joined the coalition.
