The year 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the implementation of the International Conference’s Action Programme on Population and Development. Vietnam has achieved significant milestones in population work, contributing significantly to the socio-economic development, poverty alleviation, and improvement of people's quality of life.
Vietnam is among the successful countries in achieving the Millennium Development Goals in 2015 and progressing towards the successful implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Agenda by 2030. Vietnam has been recognised and highly praised, receiving the Population Award.
At the meeting, Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan asked the Department of Population to collaborate with international organisations and relevant agencies to continue researching and assessing the current situation of population work and the factors affecting the country’s sustainable development. The focus is on drafting a Law on Population aimed at shifting from family planning policies to population-centred approaches and development.
She also noted that the ministries, agencies, provincial People's Committees, and cities should prioritise leadership and direction in population work; integrate population factors into local development strategies, policies, and socio-economic development projects; and allocate funds and capable personnel to successfully achieve the goals and tasks set for population work at various levels.
