Internationals call for an end to violence in Nigeria

VTV.vn - The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat on October 22 strongly condemned the ongoing violence in Nigeria, especially in Lagos, while calling on all parties to "privilege dialogue".

In the statement released by spokesperson Ebba Kalondo, Faki appealed to all political and social actors to reject the use of violence and respect human rights and the rule of law.

The protests broke out after a video circulated allegedly showing man was shot dead by the police while marching in Delta state. Authorities imposed a round-the-clock curfew on the Nigerian state of Lagos, including Africa's biggest city.

* The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an end to reported police brutality and abuses that lasted for two weeks in Nigeria; urged security forces to act at all times with maximum restraint while calling on protestors to demonstrate peacefully and to refrain from violence.

* The Economic Community of West African States called on protesters in Nigeria to remain peaceful in their conduct. ECOWAS appealedto the government, the youth and civil society to urgently pursue dialogue for an early.
