The biennial event brings together 172 Vietnamese publishing houses and 36 foreign ones with a total of around 300,000 book titles on display.
Visitors at the fair can buy books at discounted prices or take part in other promotional programmes.
A wide range of activities are being held on the sidelines of the week-long event, including exchanges between readers and authors, book presentations, photo exhibitions of Party Congresses and Vietnam’s history, and a display of Ho Chi Minh City’s achievements on integration and development.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Truong Minh Tuan appreciated efforts made by Ho Chi Minh City’s cultural agencies, publishers and distributors in organising the book fair, which he hailed as one of major cultural events of the city.
He expressed his belief that the event would reach its target of welcoming around one million visitors.
He also noted that the event has provided valuable practical experiences for the Ministry of Information and Communications to build and complete the national strategy on books.
