VTV.vn - Ho Chi Minh City's Department of Planning and Investment has petitioned the city's People's Committee to approve a project to build roads along the Tham Lương, Bến Cát, and Nước Lên canals.

The project is expected to attract investment to improve the environment and landscape near the canals and rivers. The canal complex of Tham Lương, Bến Cát and Nước Lên is the longest canal route in the inner city of Ho Chi Minh City. The canals here will be purified to prepare for the project. The investor, Phương Nam Joint-Stock Company, has already received th approval to implement the project which will cost a total of nearly US$156 million.

The project is expected to be completed in 2019. On each side of the canals, the roads will be more than 31km long and 12m wide, with 6 lanes for vehicles. With a total length of 64 km, this project should help solve the traffic problems for eight districts in the west side of the city.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transportation, the improvement of the canals will also be calculated to serve public transportation, including river buses which will be put into operation from June 2017.

Bến Nghé canal was renovated few years ago and now becomes such a modern road. Thus, the city is expected to improve the canals system here to reduce pollution, traffic jams as well as improve the landscape in the area.
