VTV.vn - The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Council (9th tenure) convened its sixth session in the city on December 4.

The four-day session will review the city’s socio-economic performance in 2017, outline tasks for 2018 and report on the council’s supervision of legal enforcement on urban planning, among others.

In her opening speech, Chairwoman of the municipal People’s Council Nguyen Thi Quyet Tam said the city enjoyed a higher economic growth rate than in last year while positive progresses were seen in urban planning and landscaping.

She also admitted shortcomings regarding administrative reform, flooding, traffic congestion, child abuse and delayed settlement of complaints.

The implementation of the National Assembly’s Resolution No. 54 on piloting special mechanisms and policies for the city’s development will be high on the agenda, she said.

Secretary of the municipal Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan lauded the city’s major accomplishments, including the issuance of a scheme on building Ho Chi Minh City into a smart city and a decision on the process of dealing with complaints involving individuals and collectives with political ideological and moral degradation.

He described 2018 as a key year to realise the city’s five-year plan and the first year to implement the Politburo’s Conclusion No.21 and the NA’s Resolution No.54 for rapid and sustainable development.

Nhan asked the municipal People’s Council to work closely with the municipal People’s Committee in the making of decisions regarding special mechanisms and policies.

According to the municipal People’s Committee, the local economic growth is expected to hit 8.25 percent this year while revenue to the State budget would near 348 trillion VND (15.46 billion USD), or 100.03 percent of the estimate, up 12.94 percent.

The city recorded 41,217 newly-established businesses with a total registered capital of 577.36 trillion VND this year, up 13.4 percent in volume and 92.4 percent in value. The city encouraged 3,062 business households to switch their status to businesses.
