A celebration to mark the event took place this morning at the Hanoi Opera House, with the attendance of Vice President Nguyen Thi Ngoc Thinh. The collaboration between Vietnam and UNFPA have shown the differences in terms of Vietnam’s population figures over the years. In 1970, each couple in Vietnam had an average of 5 children while that figure is now 2.09. Contraceptive usage was only also at 37% of the population 30 years ago, while it is 67% now. Health indices including deaths in mothers while giving birth have decreased from 233 per 100,000 in 1990 to 58.3 per 100,000 in 2016. This year’s World Population Day theme is “Family Planning: Empowering People, Developing Nations”./.
