The airport is expected to meet increasing demand for air transport, promote local socio-economic development, ensure mobility in rescue work as well as guarantee national defence and security in the Central region.
Quang Tri Airport is designed to be a 4C grade civil airport under the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organisation, and also a level 2 military airport.
It has a designed capacity of carrying one million passengers and 3,100 tonnes of cargo per year.
The airport will accommodate about 2.2 million passengers per year by 2046 and 5,600 tonnes of cargo by 2042. After which, it will be upgraded to carry about 5 million passengers per year and 13,700 tonnes of cargo per year.
It is estimated that an investment of about 5,822 billion VND (US$254 million) is required for the building and upgrading of the airport.
The project will be completed in 22 months with a payback period of 47 years and four months.
