Gender imbalance in Vietnam

by VTV401 November 2017 Last updated at 04:45 AM

VTV.vn - In Vietnam, many people still prefer to have baby boys over girls which is why the number of male babies has surpassed the number of female ones, resulting in a serious gender imbalance.

This can't be seen immediately, but in a couple of decades, millions of males in Vietnam won't be able to find female partners. Other consequences of this phenomenon include increases in sex related crimes and female traffickers. In order to prevent gender imbalance in the future, being able to choose genders from birth should be done more effectively. More importantly though the people's mentality of preferring boys should also change.
