The Tran Van Khe Foundation, a non-profit fund named after the late Professor Tran Van Khe, was launched in 2021, to grant awards and scholarships to students, researchers and artists for their excellent achievements in learning, teaching, researching, and performing in Vietnam’s traditional music.
The Tran Van Khe Awards (worth 30 million VND each) were presented to six researchers and artists, including Meritorious Artist, teacher and musician Nguyen Van Doi, who was former head of the Department of Folk Music of the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music; researcher, Assoc. Prof., Dr. Dang Hoanh Loan; researcher, and musician Bui Trong Hien; Meritorious Artist Nguyen Thi Hai Phuong, head of the Department of Folk Music of the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music; Meritorious Artist, Dr. Co Huy Hung, head of the Department of Folk Music of the Vietnam National Academy of Music; and MA.Phan Nhut Dung, a folk musician.
Meanwhile, Tran Van Khe Scholarships (worth 10 million VND each) were handed over to nine students from the Vietnam National Academy of Music, Hue Academy of Music, and Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music.
“The happiest thing is that the Tran Van Khe Foundation has received well-deserved nominations from major cultural centres of the country, such as Hanoi, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City. In the list of nominees, some intellectuals and artists are approximately 90 years old and also an 11-year-old student, a blind student, and others,” said Deputy Director of Tran Van Khe Scholarship Fund Nguyen The Thanh.
“On behalf of the Tran Van Khe Scholarship Fund, we would like to express our gratitude to the award and scholarship winners because it is your great love and talent that have brought value, honour and pride to the Tran Van Khe Award and Scholarship, worthy of the wish of Professor Tran Van Khe - a typical intellectual that we always respect and admire,” Thanh noted.
Professor Tran Van Khe was born in 1921 in My Tho City. He is considered a great master of Vietnamese traditional music and spent his whole life studying, teaching and preserving Vietnamese traditional music.
He was offered the position of Director of research at the French National Centre for Scientific Research, Professorship at the University of Sorbonne in Paris, Honorary Member of the International Music Council (UNESCO), and Corresponding Member of the European Academy of Science, Letters, and Arts.
