EU warns yellow card risk for Vietnamese seafood

The country is given six months to take the necessary corrective measures, if not, a red card will be given, meaning that particular country is banned from exporting fish and seafood to the European Union. The EU has recommended that Vietnam properly follow regulations against unregulated fishing and correct any violations by September 30; otherwise, it is highly likely that it will be given a yellow card. During the six-month period, the country will have 100 percent of its shipments to the EU held for inspection. The process will take up to four weeks and cost some $675 per container, not to mention storage expenses charged by seaports. Furthermore, any yellow-carded country will continue to experience a higher rate of rejection by customs of other markets such as the US. In the ASEAN region, Cambodia has received a red card, while Thailand and the Philippines have been given yellow cards.
