The workshop kicks off today and is co-organised by Pham Van Dong University and Nha Trang University. This event has attracted the participation of 100 academics and researchers, who are experts on the international law of the sea and particularly interested in the current situation in the East Sea. They come from universities and institutes of the US, the UK, Belgium, Russia, Canada, Australia, India, Philippines, Japan, Thailand, Germany and Vietnam.
"This workshop revolves around the legal status of islands and rocks in international law; the sovereignty dispute over the Paracel and Spratly islands. Another topic is the Arbitration Award on the South China Sea case between the Philippines and China", Assoc. Prof. Trang Si Trung said.
The workshop also discusses unilateral acts which alter the status of East Sea, threatening the regional peace and stability.
In the workshop’s framework, an exhibition on Historical Evidence of Vietnamese sovereignty over Spratly and Paracel archipelagos will be held. Participants will join a trip to Cam Ranh Naval base on Thursday.
