VTV.vn - Five years ago, Laurie ‘Truck’ Sams, an Australian veteran who fought in the American war, heard about a Vietnamese doctor named Dang Thuy Tram, who worked as a battlefield surgeon during the war.

Inspired by her story, he decided to get a copy of the doctor’s diary. On a cycling trip across the Vietnamese countryside, he has stopped by the clinic named after the woman he has deep respect for.

Laurie Sams is familiar with the peaceful countryside of Vietnam. Vietnam today is much different from what he remembers from his time here during the war. Every year for the past 10 years, Laurie has cycled across the country to learn more about its culture. And this is the second time he’s chosen to visit the Dang Thuy Tram clinic. Laurie wants to know how an ordinary Hanoian woman was able to cross the Trường Sơn Range to take care of wounded soldiers in the southern battlefield.

Laurie Sams is still suffering from post traumatic stress disorder after taking part in the war that broke out in Vietnam. Cycling through villages in the countryside of Vietnam has helped him find peace of mind. He has also found solace in Dang Thuy Tram’s diary.

Through his yearly journey across Vietnam, Laurie has seen the desire for peace in the Vietnamese people, including the inspiring woman he has always kept in his mind: Doctor Dang Thuy Tram.
