VTV.vn - Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh joined farmers and ploughed a field on February 11, at a festival that dates back to more than 1,000 years ago and has been restored in recent years.

The field ploughing festival was first organised in 987 by Emperor Le Dai Hanh at the foot of Doi Mountain in present-day Ha Nam province.

This is the tenth year that the festival, a national cultural heritage, has been re-enacted.

Deputy PM Binh stated that the field ploughing festival is meaningful to encourage agricultural production and elevate the spirit of attaching importance to a sector considered as the foundation of the economy.

This year’s festival took place at a joyful time as Ha Nam province has recorded significant achievements in agriculture and rural development, with more than 90% of communes being recognised as new rural areas.

On the national level, Vietnam is now among the world’s 15 largest exporters of agricultural produce, with export revenues reaching US$40 billion in 2018.

Deputy PM Binh said that, in order for Vietnamese agriculture to grow further, it is necessary to buy into the spirit of the field ploughing festival and push through agricultural restructuring combined with rural modernisation.
