The stormy season is also the low season in Vietnam's central coastal provinces, as bad weather often disrupts beach and island tours.
To maintain visitor numbers, tour operators are adjusting itineraries to include more indoor cultural attractions. These spaces offer shelter from the rain while giving visitors opportunities to discover local heritage and traditions.
Sometimes, the smallest objects bring back the fondest memories. From colourful traditional dough figurines to an old rice mill, these familiar sights take visitors back to their childhood and the simple rhythms of village life.
Luong Thi Trang, a tourist, said: "This rice mill once helped feed our family. Seeing it again brings back so many memories’.
Despite the stormy weather in Nha Trang, these tourists spend an afternoon exploring local traditions instead of the beach. Through their craftsmanship, local artisans share stories of Khanh Hoa and its fading traditional trades.
Quy is one of the province's few remaining guitar makers. His workshop offers more than shelter from the rain. Visitors can discover his craft and enjoy the calming sound of music amid the storms.
Luu Hoang Quy, a guitar maker from Nha Trang Ward, Khanh Hoa Province, said: "People often describe this place as a shelter. Visitors can escape the storms while still enjoying tourist activities".
Khanh Hoa welcomed more than 20 million visitors in the first nine months of this year. To sustain growth in the final quarter, tour operators are adapting itineraries to unfavourable weather. Indoor attractions offer an effective way to keep tourists engaged.
Nguyen Phi Hong Nguyen, vice chairman of the Khanh Hoa Travel Association, said: We offer cultural tourism experiences combining visits to heritage sites and traditional craft villages. These encourage tourists to explore inland attractions and learn about local culture.
Beyond beaches and islands, cultural spaces are helping diversify tourism, extend visitor stays and offer rainy-season alternatives.
However, sustained investment is needed to create meaningful experiences that bring local heritage to life and connect with visitors through compelling cultural stories.
