VTV.vn - “Clean the Sea”, a volunteer driven campaign, has been kickstarted at the central level following a launch ceremony held in Kien Giang province’s Phu Quoc island district on July 28.

The effort, co-organised by the Vietnam Youth Federation, the Vietnam Volunteer Centre (VVC), Vietnam Television’s VTV24 News Centre, and the US Embassy in Vietnam, aims to raise community awareness of the importance of the sea to human life, while calling for joint efforts to protect the marine environment via practical actions in line with the conditions of each locality.

This year’s campaign is expected to attract at least 28,000 participants with rubbish collections performed regularly at least once a week at key polluted sites.

In his opening remarks, Nguyen Kim Quy, Vice President of the Vietnam Youth Federation Central Committee, emphasised that “Clean the Sea” is one of the major tasks of the 2018 summer volunteer campaign.

Currently, youth union members from 28 cities and provinces with coastlines have already mapped out plans to organise sea environmental protection activities in an effective fashion, he said.

Within the framework of the campaign, photographer Nguyen Van Hung will implement a project “Photographing and filming for the environment of a 3,000km coastline”, with the view of using pictures to change the awareness and actions of the community. Under the project, Hung plans to take 3,000 photos and make five videos, which will be introduced to the public through an exhibition in the future.

A ceremony to summarise the “Clean the Sea” campaign is scheduled to be held in September 2018.
