VTV.vn - Vietnam’s No. 1 chess player Le Quang Liem has made it through to the quarterfinals of the Chessable Masters online rapid tournament, finishing sixth in the preliminary round with nine points from 15 matches.

Chessable Masters is the eighth stage of the US$1.6 million 2021 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour, a 10-month long series of 10 chess tournaments initiated by chess king Magnus Carlsen (Norway) and played online on Chess24.com.

This event has seen the first-ever absence of Carlsen, who is busy with competing in the FIDE World Cup 2021, as well as some other popular names, but gave invitation to two leading female players, Humpy Koneru (India) and Ju Wenjun (China), as well as Abhimanyu Mishra (US).

The 15-match prelims took place from July 31 to August 3, with Quang Liem winning four games against women’s world champion Ju Wenjun, Koneru and Mishra, in addition to drawing 10 and losing just one against Alireza Firouzja - France’s No. 1 player.

Liem’s sixth finish in the prelims has brought him to a quarterfinal clash with third-placed Firouzja, who scored 10.5 points, granting him the chance to avenge his defeat against the French competitor.

Vietnamese grandmaster Le Quang Liem finishes sixth in the preliminary round on nine points.

The three other last-eight matches will be Wesley So (US) vs Jorden van Foreest (Netherlands), Hikaru Nakamura (US) vs Vladislav Artemiev (Russia), and Levon Aronian (Armenia) vs Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan).

The quarterfinal fixtures are scheduled for August 4-5 (Hanoi time), with each participant to play four rapid chess games per day. In the case of a draw, a blitz tie-break will be applied to decide who will advance to the last four.

This is the third time Quang Liem has participated in the 2021 Champion Chess Tour and also the second time he has booked a place in the knockout phase.

Earlier, in April, the Vietnamese star made the quarterfinals of the fifth stage Chess Classic but was then ousted by Hikaru Nakamura (US).
