VTV.vn - A ceremony was held at the Dong Loc T-junction special national site on July 26 to mark 73rd anniversary of Wounded and Fallen Soldiers’ Day and the 52nd anniversary of the historic Dong Loc Victory.

The event was hosted by Nhan Dan (People) Newspaper in coordination with the Ha Tinh provincial authorities.

During the national salvation war against the US, Dong Loc T-junction was a very important position on the legendary Truong Son route. Thus, it became a target of heavy US bombings during the 1964-1972 period, with an estimated 48,600 bombs of various types being dropped from March to October in 1968.

Thousands of locals, officials and soldiers showed their bravery by sacrificing themselves to ensure the safe operation of the transport route which linked to the southern front. Notably, ten young female volunteers, aged from 17 to 24, were killed while trying to level bomb craters to reopen the intersection on July 24, 1968.

Their sacrifices have become a symbol of Vietnamese young people who were willing to devote their youth, and even their lives, to the national cause of liberation and reunification.

Addressing the event, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh hailed Nhan Dan Newspaper and the Ha Tinh provincial authorities for hosting the event, which showed deep gratitude for revolutionary contributors and fallen soldiers’ services for the country.

He called on further support and donations for former youth volunteers and families of war martyrs in Ha Tinh Province as well as the tens of thousands of others across the country.

He noted that, in recent years, preferential policies targeting revolutionary contributors have been well observed and effectively implemented by Party committees, authorities, the Fatherland Front at all levels and people nationwide.

Accordingly, dozens of trillions of Vietnamese dong have been allocated from the State budget every year to care for revolutionary contributors and policy beneficiaries nationwide.

On the occasion, the Deputy PM presented gifts to relatives of the ten young unmarried female volunteers, families of sick soldiers and policy beneficiaries, and Dong Loc T-junction site’s management board.

The ceremony was followed by an art programme featuring touching songs and dances honouring the bravery of soldiers and young volunteers who laid down their lives in on the Dong Loc battlefield.
