Central region braces for new tropical depression and heavy rains

VTV.vn - Localities in the central region are making urgent efforts to overcome the damages from the current severe flooding while bracing against the heavy rains from a new tropical depression.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the reported tropical depression was located about 290 km east of the coast of the provinces from Da Nang to Binh Dinh at 10 am this morning (October 16), packing winds of 40-50kph.

In the next 12 hours, the tropical depression is forecast to move in the westwards at a speed of 30kph, before going deep inland into central Vietnam where it will gradually weaken into a low pressure area.

Due to the circulation of the tropical depression, from now until October 21, the central region will continue to be hit by heavy rains, especially in Ha Tinh and Quang Binh, with total rainfall ranging from 500-800mm, even reaching over 900mm in some places.

After October 21, provinces in the central and southern parts of the central region would suffer from prolonged heavy rains.

Donations made to provide flood relief to central region

Donations are being made by businesses and localities nationwide to assist residents in the flood-hit central region.

On October 15, a delegation from the Vietnam Bank for Social Policies presented VND1.2 billion to six central provinces that have suffered damages from floods.

On the same day, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) visited the region, offering condolences and presenting VND4 billion in aid to the flood-hit provinces of Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue and Quang Nam (VND1 billion each). In addition, PetroVietnam’s Trade Union provided VND500 million to support the two provinces of Thua Thien Hue and Quang Tri.

Yesterday afternoon, Hai Phong City decided to deduct VND10 billion from its budget to support people in the central region to overcome the flood consequence. Hai Phong also called on the whole city to join hands to support the central compatriots.

On October 15, the Lang Son City based Thanh Long Co., Ltd. supported flood-hit provinces including Thua Thien Hue, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Quang Nam and Ha Tinh with 5,000 biscuit packages, worth a total of VND1.25 billion.

On October 14, at the opening session of the 17th Party Congress of Vinh Phuc province, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the northern locality also called for donations to the central region. Vinh Phuc decided to provide VND5 billion to affected provinces.
