Under the contract, the Boeing-made planes which have been manufactured and handed over to NATO since 1982, will be overhauled with more powerful computer processors, servers and equipment.
The upgrade will be funded by 16 NATO allies and some work will be subcontracted to European suppliers including Leonardo and Airbus. Boeing is in a difficult time as it remains unclear when the 737 Max will be allowed to fly again after two aviation accidents.
