VTV.vn - A ceremony took place in Tan Yen District in the northern province of Bac Giang to mark the export of 15 tonnes of ‘thieu’ lychees to Japan on May 26.

The shipments were made by exporters Global Export and Import Foodstuff JSC and Chanh Thu Co., Ltd.

This is the second year Bac Giang ‘thieu’ lychees have entered the Japanese market.

According to Chairman of the Bac Giang Provincial People’s Committee Le Anh Duong, the local authorities have taken measures to ensure the quality, food safety and hygiene of the lychees for export.

The authorities have also actively worked with the Japanese Embassy to receive a Geographical Indication (GI) certificate to lychees grown in Luc Ngan District, making it the first Vietnamese product to obtain such certification in Japan.

This year, Bac Giang Province has around 28,100 ha of lychees with an estimated output of over 180,000 tonnes, an increase of 15,000 tonnes year-on-year. This includes 45,000 tonnes of early-ripening lychee harvested on an estimated area of 6,050 ha along with 135,000 tonnes of lychee from the main crop on an area of 22,050 ha.

The harvest is expected to last until July 20.

Facing complicated developments of COVID-19, particularly as Bac Giang is now a pandemic cluster of the country with the number of COVId-19 cases having reached over 1,000, the provincial authorities have developed three scenarios for consuming lychees this year.

In the first scenario when the Covid-19 pandemic is put under control, 50% of the lychee output will be consumed domestically while the remaining for export.

If the pandemic witnesses complicated situation but still under control in the second scenario, the province will allocate 70% of this fruit’s output for domestic consumption and 30% for export.

In case Bac Giang cannot export lychees this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the third scenario, the province will focus on promoting domestic consumption.

The province will also plan a teleconference on June 8 to promote the domestic consumption and export of lychee. The video conference will be held in 29 venues, connect representatives from Vietnam, China, Japan, Singapore, and Australia.
