Apple and Google partner on COVID-19 contact tracing technology

The contact-tracing method works by using a smartphone's Bluetooth signal to determine who the owner had recently been in contact with long enough to have established a risk of contagion.

If one of those people later tested positive for the COVID-19 virus, a warning will be sent to the original handset owner. The companies said that no GPS location data or personal information will be recorded. The technology is currently being tested on a number of volunteers in the US.
