The program will carry out many activities such as educating people, introducing alternative products to plastic bags, supporting environmentally-friendly companies, and intensifying penalties for violations.
According to statistics of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, each Vietnamese household uses five to seven plastic bags per day. Only two big cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, average about 80 tons of plastic bags per day.
Only a small part of this is collected and recycled, while the rest is buried or thrown away. For a long time, scientists have used the word "white pollution" to refer to environmental pollution caused by plastic bags.
