This is the 8th year Vietnam has responded to the 2016 Earth Hour drive. The ceremony attracted a large number of students who showed a keen interest and sense of personal responsibility for environmental problems. The event helps communities and young people improve their perception about saving energy, coping with climate change, and environmental protection.
"By turning off lights for 1 hour in response to the Earth Hour 2016, we can promote the awareness of local communities in terms of environmental protection and energy saving", Trinh Quoc Vu, Head of Department of Science, Technology and Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Trade and Industry, said.
According the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam's electricity sector can save up to $50 million each year by cutting 3-5% of its annual electricity consumption. After 7 years in operation, the Earth Hour campaign continues to receive huge support from the government, corporations, and thousands of individuals across the country. In Ho Chi Minh City, there will be two new projects under the theme “Green destination” and “Green home” in response to Earth Hour 2016.
During the campaign on March 19th, lights and electrical equipment will be turned off for 1 hour from 8.30-9.30pm on March 19th. Held in Vietnam for the 8th time, the Earth Hour campaign is expected to raise awareness about saving energy, particularly in an effort to cut 8% of greenhouse gasses by 2030.
