With more than 10,700 athletes competing across Aichi and Nagoya, the 20th Asian Games was more than a showcase of records and medals. One of the most memorable aspects of this year’s Games was the way people came together, transcending borders. That is the essence of “Imagine One Asia”, a vision of a united Asia.
As the vibrant journey of ASIAD 20 in Aichi and Nagoya came to a close, the spirit of Imagine One Asia was evident not only in the competition but also in the simplest of gestures. Nagoya’s distinctive fans carried wishes from people across Asia. Japanese primary school students created heartfelt drawings for the athletes to express their admiration and encouragement, transcending language barriers. Journalists from different countries exchanged small gifts while covering the Games, turning the pressures of reporting on a major sporting event into moments of warmth and camaraderie.
Volunteers from different countries also worked together to help ensure the smooth running of the Games. Together, these moments transcended geographical boundaries and reflected an Asia united by solidarity, mutual support and shared hopes for peace.
Once the final medal had been awarded and the Asian Games flame extinguished, what remained for journalists in Nagoya was more than a story about winners and losers. ASIAD 20 offered a glimpse of an Asia brought closer together. The Games’ central message, “Imagine One Asia”, embodies a vision of a united continent. Together with the Japanese hosts’ simple message, ‘Here, we are one’, that spirit was evident in people’s faces and interactions throughout the Games.
