VTV.vn - Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and the Vietnamese high-ranking delegation returned to Hanoi on Sunday, successfully ending their official visit to the United States at the invitation of President Barack Obama’s administration.

The visit has been regarded as a historic milestone, helping deepen Vietnam-United States ties. The international media continues has given the event extensive coverage.

Radio France Internationale described Vietnam Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s visit to the United States as historic, laying the foundations for the relationship between the two countries to grow in the future.

US National Journal said the visit would be the latest step in the president’s nearly life-long attempt to come to grips with a war that he was too young to fully understand but which still casts a powerful shadow over his foreign policy.

The Telegram of France commented that It was an unprecedented meeting. The Obama Administration, which has elevated its foreign policy to the Asia flagship region, has a clear mission to continue strengthening its ties with Vietnam.

The Eurasia Review wrote: Trong was the first Vietnamese Communist Party chief to visit Washington, a significant milestone for both countries. Later in the year, most likely in December, President Obama will visit Hanoi to give a new strategic dimension to the bilateral relationship.

After Vietnam’s entry into the World Trade Organisation in 2007, economic relations between the two countries entered into a new phase. During the last five years, the trade between the two countries has more than doubled, surging from US$14.2 billion in 2010 to $36.30 billion in 2014
